EMOTIONS ARE HEALTHY
The first thing I want you to know is for you to have the confidence that you are the parent and in control. Respectful Parenting is honoring that children can and should have a huge range of emotions like anger, frustration, sadness, jealousy, disappointment, joy, kindness, excitement, compassion, etc. Our aim is to help them navigate through those emotions in a healthy way and empowering them with tools to equip them for the rest of their lives so the first thing I would say is, it’s okay if your child gets mad at you when you tell him no.
A big part of parenthood is learning to set effective boundaries. What are your rules around screen time and do you enforce them consistently? Does your son know what is expected of him - when, how long, how often, what he can and cannot do, games he can and cannot play, people he can and cannot talk to and do you have a protective plan in place to keep him safe and follow through with these boundaries?
Part of setting the boundaries, without shaming, nagging, or scaring for the purpose of scaring, is to explain why screen time should be limited. How it hurts his brain and development. What the blue light does to his eyes. How your job as his mama is to always keep him safe.
Ultimately, your final goal is to always work together as a team. You are the parent and you set the boundaries but he has the freedom to explore within those boundaries. It doesn’t mean that you are on opposite teams, it just means you have to lead with love because you love him.
Working together means allowing him the space to come out with solutions. I can’t let you play with the iPad every single hour because it’s not good for you. What can we work out instead?
It may surprise you the ideas that he comes out with. Beyond the iPad issue, you are teaching him critical problem solving skills that will help him for the rest of his life in any situations.
The truth is, nothing will ever completely go their way for our little ones. So why are we making life harder for them by unrealistically setting up the expectation that it always will when we give them everything they want when we could prepare them lovingly instead on how to navigate no’s, compromise, listening, respecting, understanding.
Who else would be able to teach them these life lessons with the respect and patience of a mama heart?
TRUST YOUR MOTHERHOOD
Trust yourself and be calm and confident that you are doing the best job and the best person in the world to do this.
Own up that you are the leader, that you are in control because it wouldn’t make sense for a 2 year old to be in charge of the household.
You are mama, you can and should set these boundaries, even if he gets mad at you or upset or frustrated. It’s okay if he does that, hear him out, give him space to be sad, but absolutely always follow through.
If you are consistent, you will see your relationship grow in leaps and bounds.
